Hand-collected on the Northern California coast. Instead of the usual moss, this agate is crowded with little rings and orbs in cream, tan and rust, packed together like bubbles in a glass of soda. Hangs on an antique bronze-plated bail.
Peach and pale orange rings stacked one inside the next, so the whole thing reads like a shell. It's Bahia agate, and each ring is a layer of silica that settled in after the one before it. Antique bronze-plated bail and a matching chain.
Orange at one end, honey yellow at the other, with thin dark veins branching through the middle. Those veins are where the stone cracked a very long time ago and mineral filled the cracks back in, which is what brecciated means. I like this one a lot.
Dark gray, cream and tan patches drifting into each other across a big smooth oval. It looks a little like a satellite photo of clouds. Antique bronze-plated bail with a matching 20 inch chain.
Granite doesn't get much love in jewelry, which is a shame. Granite forms when magma cools slowly underground, slowly enough for the mineral crystals to grow big enough to see, and those speckles are the crystals. This one is a rounded heart of dark and light gray, tumbled so smooth it feels like glass.
Long and low, shaped like a good skipping stone. Green jasper with yellow running through every crack.
Ferruginous just means there's iron in it. Here the iron shows up as thin rusty red veins cracking across creamy quartz. Wide, flat shape that hangs sideways on the chain, and it's reversible, so when you get tired of one side, flip it over.
Count the eyes on this one. I got to five before I lost track, and every one is a little ring of orange and gold around a pale center. Down near the bottom a cream band runs straight across, like somebody underlined it.
Agate collectors call this pattern fortification, because the bands step inward at sharp angles like walls around a keep. Rusty orange rim, layer after layer of cream and tan inside it, and a little peach-colored core right in the middle. It's no longer available, so this one is just for looking.
